Welcome to the website of the 2008 Out of the Box Festival for 3 to 8 year olds. This year, for the first time, the Festival is co-presented by all the Partners of the Cultural Centre – Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum South Bank, State Library of Queensland and Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
A QPAC initiative, Out of the Box is Australia’s leading arts and cultural festival for this age group and, in collaboration with early childhood teachers, artists and researchers, has been developing extraordinary arts experiences for children since 1992.
In putting together the 2008 Festival program for Out of the Box, we worked around a simple theme – Sharing our Stories.
Sharing our Stories was inspired by visits to Brisbane primary schools and by the experiences of KITE Arts Education Program working in schools in outer Brisbane areas. Such visits serve to confirm our city’s increasingly rich demographic and cultural diversity and highlight the need to ensure children and families of all backgrounds feel at home in our community. What better way of achieving this than by sharing each other’s stories?
Sharing our Stories also has another meaning. Presenting Out of the Box with QPAC’s Cultural Centre neighbours, allows us share ‘stories’ from the Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Museum South Bank, the State Library of Queensland and of course from QPAC itself.
This gives you fascinating choices – you can experience life in prehistoric times in Gondwana, then cross over to Queensland Museum South Bank for the Dinosaur Trail, followed by the Critters workshop or a visit to the Sciencentre.
If you have a budding visual artist in the family, why not attend a workshop on painting or design and then come to a performance of What Does Red do on Thursday? Afterwards, visit one of the amazing exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery, have a look at Animations – animated stories made by children for children – and then visit Family Album. In between, don’t forget to stop off at Island and savour the exciting Aboriginal, Torres Strait or Pacific Island performers sharing the stories of our nation’s first people.
Bookworms could attend Beeware at the State Library of Queensland (and even meet the writer), check out the Brillustrators Exhibition courtesy of Museum of Brisbane and write and post a letter to friends or family for free at The Writing Post. Maybe in between, experience the beautiful musical rendition of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story, The Little Mermaid, or attend Funny Voices to see how two newcomers to Australia share their stories without language.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Cultural Centre for Out of the Box 2008…come and get your share of our exciting stories!
